The only thing I might suggest adding? Find a mentor. Someone to bounce ideas off of. Someone who can see the things in your blind spot. I’m fortunate to have two in my life. I only draw on them about once a month but they can be priceless!

I like it for my school group so I can project a dungeon map on the white board for all the players to see without giving away too many things.

Ill spend weeks preparing a new game to run, be totally stoked about it and then after maybe 5 or 6 sessions start to notice something else. Once this starts there is no stopping it, the new shiny thing just gets my attention and the old one becomes dull and uninteresting. I used to struggle and cling to whatever game I was running but it became a chore, a burden and finally Id just give up. Ive sense decided that I deserve to have fun too so when the game loses its luster, I move to something else. Chances are Ill return to it eventually, possibly within a few months even after visiting a few other games. This is tough on players I know and I try to feed my addiction sometimes with solo efforts but in the end they pretty much have to tolerate this if they want me to GM.

More of this please. Witty, geeky (with referenecs even I’m surprised got used), and thoughtful, Josh’s article tackles something deeply personal for many of us. I adore the framework he’s given, as well as the encouragement, to run a different kind of game.

Can’t wait to use it!

In Ars Magica, you play both wizards and their henchmen. The wizards are on a different “layer” when it comes to the decision-making, while the henchmen are more traditional adventurers.

One way of broadening a narrow game is to combine it with another game. In a way, the Free League’s games are like this. It’s the same game in different packages, and you can combine them to get “kids on space bikes meets aliens”, for examples. I’m currently playing with the idea of combining Unknown Armies with City of Mist and Kingdom of Nothing.
